Getting Good Produce In the Heart of Winter

Monday, January 12th, 2009

I am sure many of you run into the same issues I do in the winter when it comes to produce. It is hard to find a reasonable selection of what is in season. During the rest of the year, I usually make a weekly visit to my neighborhood produce stand to do the majority of my shopping for farm fresh fruits and vegetables. During the late fall and on through the winter the produce stand closes, making it a challenge to find a broad selection at the grocery store. In my opinion, not only are the selections limited, they are somewhat pricey as well.

To combat this challenge, my wife and I decided to take a more pro-active approach to doing our produce shopping. She discovered an organic co-op of sorts that will deliver produce to you on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. They have a list of what is available for you that week, and it has not only lowered our produce bill for the month, it has also drastically reduced spoilage, and has lowered our overall grocery costs. The service has also enabled us to better plan healthier meals for the week by focusing our “menus” around the produce. The vegetables are fresh and delicious, and it is very gratifying to help support local farmers.
